“Construction New EraInnovation & Professionalism

The HKICM/HKCA SME Committee 2019 Joint Conference, jointly organized by Hong Kong Institute of Construction Managers (HKICM) and Small & Medium Enterprises Committee of Hong Kong Construction Association (SME Committee, HKCA), was successfully held on Friday, 11 October 2019 at the Grand Ballroom of Hong Kong Ocean Park Marriot Hotel in Aberdeen, Hong Kong. With the theme of “Construction New Era‧Innovation and Professionalism”, the conference was well received by about 300 distinguished guests and delegates, including government officials, prominent figures from educational and professional bodies, construction practitioners, senior executives of major developers, consultants and SME construction companies, representatives of associations and HKICM members.

It was delighted to have Ir LAM Sai-hung, JP, Permanent Secretary (Works) of Development Bureau, HKSAR Government as Guest-of-Honour and various eminent local and overseas experts and academia as guest speakers to share their experiences and insights at the conference as well as moderators and panelists in the panel discussion sessions.

The conference started with the welcome remarks by HKICM President, Cr Daniel SHUM and HKCA President, Mr Allan CHAN to warmly welcome all the distinguished guests, speakers, moderators, panelists and participants. Ir LAM Sai-hung, Permanent Secretary (Works) of Development Bureau then delivered the keynote address, outlining the challenges that construction industry is facing, such as escalation in construction costs and manpower demands for construction services, insight on the current states of industry with statistics, government initiatives related to management of the challenges confronting the industry and the ongoing development of Hong Kong’s construction industry.

Thereafter, the conference was divided into 4 sessions under the theme “Construction New Era‧Innovation and Professionalism” to explore on:
Session 1:  Challenges and the Way ahead in the Construction Industry
“A New Era of Construction” by Mr CHAN Ka-kui, SBS, JP (Chairman, Construction Industry Council); and

“Cultivate a Nurturing Field for Innovative Construction” by Ms HO Wing Yin, Winnie, JP (Deputy Director of Architectural Services, Architectural Services Department, HKSAR Government)
The speakers shared their points of view from developer and government on current challenges of construction industry to cope with and new insights on the innovative construction adoption.
Session 2: New Era: Advanced Technology Trends and Applications

“Construction Knowledge is no longer a variable, but change is inevitable” by Mr David BURNELL, FAIB (National President, Australian Institute of Building); and

“New Era: Advanced Construction Technologies and Applications” by Ir Conrad WONG, BBS, JP (Vice Chairman, Yau Lee Holdings Limited)
The speakers provided their insights on making use of advanced technologies to enhance the building efficiency. Overseas speaker Mr. David BURNELL shared views on the latest development of construction in Australia with a focus on the impetus of digital management.
Session 3: Adaptations in Hong Kong Industries Upgrade

“MiC Adaptation in InnoCell” by Mr Simon WONG (Chief Project Development Officer, Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation); and

“Construction Innovations to Enhance Safety Management & Construction Quality” by Ir MOK Kwok Ho (Executive Director, Hip Hing Construction Company Limited)
The speakers shared their experience on enhancing productivity by adaptation of construction innovations. Ir MOK Kwok-ho inspired the audience by a case sharing of Hip Hing Construction in achieving a better performance in safety management and construction quality.
Session 4: Revitalization and Professionalism to Strengthen the Industry

“Smarter Design, Construction Management & Operation for Smarter Cities: Global Trends & Insights” by Dr Calvin KAM (Adjunct Professor, Center for Integrated Facility Engineering (CIFE), Stanford University); and

“The importance of Professionalism & Ethical practices within the 4th industrial revolution by Dr Paul HAMPTON (Head of Department – Built Environment, University of Wolverhampton)
The speakers shared their insights on the importance of professionalism and the roles industry can play for further innovation construction, and the application of virtual design and construction has been shared. Overseas speaker Dr Calvin KAM raised that how Strategic Building Innovation (SBI) improve the future improvement projects by managing project delivery.

Construction New Era ‧ Innovation and Professionalism

The Hong Kong Construction industry is entering a new era: striving to innovate, embracing technology to save costs and boost efficiency, while nurturing young professionals towards a more sustainable future for the industry.
The HKICM/HKCA SME Committee 2019 Joint Conference will address these changing tides directly with its title theme “Construction New Era ‧ Innovation and Professionalism”. The conference features government decision makers to talk about the new trend and policies; international industry professionals to analyze case studies and application in Hong Kong; local companies and academic representatives to deliver the future opportunities of embracing the coming construction era.
